Car bomb kills 80 in Pakistan’s Peshawar city

The latest news on Pakistan’s war against the Taliban.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A car bomb tore through a crowded market in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 80 people hours after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived in the country to show American support for its campaign against Islamist militants.

More than 200 people were wounded in the blast in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, the deadliest in a surge of attacks this month. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive against al-Qaida and Taliban close to the Afghan border….

Three bombs have exploded in Peshawar this month, including one that killed more than 50 people, part of a barrage of at least 10 major attacks across the country that have killed some 250 people. Most have targeted security forces, but some bombs have gone off in public places, apparently to sow fear and expose the weakness of the government.

Canada Condemns Latest Attack in Pakistan
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement condemning the bombing in Peshawar, the latest in a series of terrorist attacks in Pakistan:

“Canada condemns this latest brutal attack on the people of Pakistan. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. That many of the victims of today’s attack were innocent women and children is particularly heinous.

“We commend the Government of Pakistan for its will to maintain the fight against violent extremist groups. Canada supports the government’s resolve to bring peace and stability to the country. We will continue to work with Pakistan and our allies to help Pakistan meet the challenges it faces.

“Canada is committed to promoting freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

United Nations
Statement by the Secretary-General on Pakistan

I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, today’s bomb attack at a market in Peshawar, Pakistan, which reportedly killed over 80 people, many of them women, and injured over 160 people. No cause can justify such inhuman and indiscriminate violence. I wish to extend my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the Government of Pakistan, and wish those injured a full recovery.
