Freedom Protests Breakout in Iran

7 December 2009 One Comment

Freedom demonstrations have broken out in Iran. Once again, thousands of brave Iranian people are rising up against the largest state sponsor of terrorism, the Iranian regime. Reportedly, the anti-regime protestors are chanting “Death to Khamenei, ” referring to Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“This feels like 1979 in reverse, the students are leading the battle and the regime of the IRI will fall” was one of the litany of descriptions coming via Twitter, one of the few resources for Iranians to use to tell the world what is happening inside Iran. The Basij, the paramilitary volunteer militia that was founded by the order of the Ayatollah Khomeini in November 1979 were also out in full violent force, but six months after President Ahmadinejad claimed a re-election victory in the disputed June 12 Presidential elections, the protestors have not been silenced or deterred.

Update from AP
Police Clash With Protesters at Iran University

TEHRAN, Iran — Security forces and militiamen clashed with thousands of protesters shouting “death to the dictator” outside Tehran University on Monday, beating them with batons and firing tear gas on a day of nationwide student demonstrations, witnesses said.

The protests were the largest in months, as university students — a bedrock of support for the pro-reform movement — sought to energize the opposition with rallies at campuses across the country. The opposition has been reeling under a fierce crackdown since turmoil erupted over the disputed presidential election in June.

Thousands of riot police, Revolutionary Guard forces and pro-government Basij militiamen flooded the area around Tehran University since the morning, vowing to prevent any unrest from spilling out into the streets.

Banners and signs bearing slogans from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blanketed the tall campus fence, hiding whatever took place inside. Cell phone networks around the universities were shut down, and police and members of the elite Revolutionary Guard surrounded all the university entrances and were checking IDs of anyone entering to prevent opposition activists from joining the students, witnesses said.

Iran chokes off Internet on eve of student rallies

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Government opponents shouted “Allahu Akbar” and “Death to the Dictator” from Tehran’s rooftops in the pouring rain on the eve of student demonstrations planned for Monday. Authorities choked off Internet access and warned journalists working for foreign media to stick to their offices for the next three days.

The measures were aimed at depriving the opposition of its key means of mobilizing the masses as Iran’s clerical rulers keep a tight lid on dissent. Government opponents are seeking, nonetheless, to get large numbers of demonstrators to turn out Monday and show their movement still has momentum.

Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi threw his support behind the student demonstrations and declared that his movement was is still alive. A statement posted on his Web site said the clerical establishment cannot silence students and was losing legitimacy in the Iranian people’s minds.
